How To Calculate Pool Volume

It’s likely that if you’re here, you’re trying to calculate how big your pool is in gallons or how much water it will take to fill it. Continue reading to see volume formulas for different pool shapes.

How to Calculate Rectangular Pool Volume

Pool Volume Calculator

Multiplying the length, width, and average depth in feet by 7.48 yields the volume of a rectangular swimming pool in gallons. To calculate pool volume in gallons, use the following formula:

volume = length × width × depth × 7.48

This formula’s first part calculates the water’s volume in cubic feet. The second section is a conversion from cubic feet to gallons; for every cubic foot of water, there are 7.48 gallons.

The depths of most pools range from shallow to deeper. You must calculate the average depth in order to determine the water volume precisely. To calculate the average depth, multiply the deep depth by the shallow depth and divide the result by two, for example, (deep + shallow) ÷ 2.

How to Calculate Circular Pool Volume

A circular swimming pool’s volume can be obtained by multiplying 3.14 by the square of the radius times 7.48. Consequently, the equation is:

volume = πr2 × average depth × 7.48

This formula’s first part (πr2) gives the area, and the volume is found by multiplying the result by the depth. To find the number of gallons per cubic foot of water, multiply the result by 7.48.

The radius of your pool is half its diameter. Thus, the radius is five feet if your pool is ten feet wide.

Multiply 5 feet by 5 feet to get the radius squared, which comes out to 25 feet. Your volume formula will look like this if your average depth is four feet:

3.14(π) × 25′(r2) × 4′ × 7.48 = 2,349 gallons

How to Calculate Triangle Pool Volume

If the shape of your pool is triangular or if there is a triangular section, you can find the triangular area by multiplying length by width and then dividing the resulting number by half.

For instance, you can use the following formula to determine how many gallons a triangular pool with dimensions of 20 feet by 10 feet by 6 feet and an average depth of 6 feet contains:

20′ × 10′ × 1/2 × 6′ × 7.48 = 4,488 gallons

How to Calculate Oblong Pool Volume

Pool Volume Calculator

The volume of an oblong-shaped pool requires more complicated calculations. First, measure the entire length of the pool as well as the width at each end.

For the purposes of this calculation, you will have a total width of 16 feet if your pool has two ends, one measuring 10 feet and the other 6 feet wide. This is because you will add the width of both ends together.

Multiply the length in feet by your total, plus the added width (the shorter + the longer width in feet) times 0.45 times the average depth in feet times 7.48 to find the pool’s volume.

volume = length × (short width + the long width) × 0.45 × depth × 7.48

The first part (length × (short width + long width) × 0.45) is used to find the area, and then the volume is found by multiplying by the depth. Like before, multiplying by 7.48 finds the number of gallons in the pool.

For example, for a pool that is 20 feet long with an added width of 18 feet and an average depth of 8 feet, your formula will look like:

20′ × 18′ × 0.45 × 8′ × 7.48 = 9,694 gallons
